What is Pilates?

A woman standing outdoors with arms crossed in front of her doing a Pilates waist twist, wearing a blue sleeveless shirt and black pants, with glasses and a black hair clip in her hair.

Pilates is a form of exercise, originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, which focuses on balance, strength, posture, flexibility and stress relief. It improves the strength of the muscles deep within the body which support our skeleton against gravity, rebalancing the body and bringing it into correct alignment. The technique cultivates awareness of the body not only in class, but also as you go about your day, to promote everyday movements that are efficient and graceful. It strengthens the body from the inside out, improving your posture and balance while at the same time relieving stress and tension.

Pilates can be practised on a mat or with specialised equipment like the Reformer. At Pilates with Claire H, we use a mat and small equipment such as resistance bands and Pilates balls. You bring your own mat and I provide the small equipment.

I use the Body Control Pilates* method in my classes. Click here to learn more.
